Spy shots are a great way to uncover future plans–or just spread rumors. No matter which, these pictures tell us a great deal about what exactly Subaru may have coming in the next couple years.
It could be confused with a five-door WRX, but considering the absence of a wider track, larger wheels, and exhaust plumbing–the mystery Impreza seems to stray too far from the traditional WRX styling.
If it is a next-gen Impreza, set for 2016 or 2017, then Subaru intends to make some obvious changes, including a wider body and taped roof panel. Another possibility however, is a hybrid. With the hybrid and EV market growing, it’s hardly surprising that Subaru wants a piece of the future as well. Earlier in the year, they announced the introduction of a plug-in hybrid to the US. But without any clear evidence of a charging port, the plug-in hybrid is only speculation.
New plans for Subaru vehicles revolve around a global modular architecture, expected be both lighter and stronger than the current Impreza.
The scarce details that we have can only produce modest guesses–but to make a reasonable prediction, we could see a vehicle this far in the testing process to be released somewhere between 2015 and 2016.

Based off of the Legacy, XV, and Levorg, Subaru has created three new concept cars to unveil at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon.
The XV Sport Concept is aimed towards giving the driver a precise driving style and a significantly sportier aesthetic. With a yellow color scheme, yellow-striped spoilers, black front grille, and alloy wheels, Subaru intends to show the potential, “casual and sporty character,” of the new XV. Only revealing an overall idea of the XV Sport, Subaru kept the specifics scarce—just mentioning the lowered suspension and sportier stance.
Little is known about the Legacy Blitzen, except that the model will be more about driving performance and showcase a unique premium red color scheme and redesigned front end.
The STI inspired, Levorg S Concept, will feature STI tuned parts such as, the intake, exhaust, direct-injected turbo engine, chassis and suspension tweaks, strut tower brace, and sports suspension.
So far, this is all we know. Along with the teaser image that Subaru released. Questions will be answered, however, at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 9—and Subaru has done its job in gathering interest.
